St Paul countryside
DiscoverIn the 1960s, the Saint-Paul countryside remained very rural. The hills were a patchwork of plots where carnations, fragrant roses, vines and market garden produce were grown.
Saint-Paul de Vence: famed for its fragrant flowers
May rose and bitter orange blossom can be credited for contributing to the noble reputation of Saint-Paul’s agriculture. Saint-Paul de Vence produced 140 tons of May roses in 1905 and 200 tons in 1913. These flowers were sent directly to the perfume capital Grasse, for distilling. Countless water basins built atop the hillsides irrigated the terraced crops. Today, truffle oaks, aromatic herbs and vines still embellish these terraces.
